Background Information:
The Black Russian Terrier*
Imposing in size and stature, the Black Russian Terrier was bred by the crossing of several working breeds. Dominant in the breed creation were the Rottweiler, Giant Schnauzer and Airedale. All selection was done with strict adherence to the desired characteristics for a strong, healthy and formidable working dog. Only dogs with working traits were considered for further breeding.
In the first breeding a male Chaiter (861) was selected. He was an extraordinary animal with a strong constitution, large boned, possessing a Schnauzer-type head, dark eyes and good teeth. This first group crossed the Giant Schnauzer with the Airedale breed, resulting in an animal with a well developed torso and deep chest whose height at the shoulder reached 63 cm. with a weight of 32 kg. The working and conformation qualities were rated as excellent. From 1952 to 1954 a significant number of first generation dogs were bred.
The second group, breeding the Giant Schnauzer with the Rottweiler, was followed by a cross breeding of the first group with the second, and finally, the breeding within the breed. All origins have been carefully documented.
Bearing the name of their country of origin, the Black Russian Terrier is recognized by the FCI. It is a formidable and trainable protector, who also possesses a calm, interested disposition. Easily socialized, the Black Russian Terrier is an impressive and imposing dog who can also serve as an excellent family companion.
The luxurious black coat was specifically developed to withstand climactic extremes. The coat develops to 4 inches in length and may be slightly wavy, but never curly. When hand-stripping is performed the coat will attain a coarse texture.
In the United States the Black Russian may be shown in full coat or hand-stripped - the latter being preferred. The appearance would be full, not close. The head and front should be with full beard, falling from in front of the ears and covering the face, much like that of a Kerry Blue Terrier. It is physically a very powerful, large-boned dog exhibiting an enormous head and shoulder with a large meaty mouth. Highly angulated from the rear, one would envision an adept pulling dog. The Black Russian Terrier is without a doubt an exciting addition to the dog world and deserves to be admired and enjoyed.
It is the intent of the Black Russian Terrier Club of America to present this dog in the Working Group and to seek AKC recognition. It is also our intent to adhere to sound breeding practices in order to maintain proper type and temperament. We encourage developing the working skills to the highest possible degree while maintaining stable social instincts.
